The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Client: Young adults
This is a book cover re-design for Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. This science fiction book provides the underlying message to make the best of what you’ve got, because life throws you a lot of random situations.
Final
I addressed the design challenge by analyzing components of the story that made it random. For instance, throughout the book you’ll find many objects that are randomly placed: a potted plant and whale are featured on the cover to represent this. I had the elements hanging by a string to represent the misplacement of those items; how those items – like in the story – shouldn’t belong in this context, but we see them anyway.
Progress
I designed the entire book cover in Adobe Sketch on my iPad Pro. The design challenge for this project was to create an abstract illustration while also remaining with the book’s theme of space and randomness. There are a lot of moving parts in this book, so I also had the challenge of not making the cover too overwhelming.
