The 5 Types of Madness
Client: Edgar Allan Poe readers
This project focuses on object manipulation; creating something new from existing objects. I used Shadowology to construct my cover. I got inspired by film director, Vincent Bal, who creates unique shadows with ordinary objects. He combines everyday objects, their shadows, and doodles to create amazing cartoons. This book features five of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories that share the theme of madmen: “The Black Cat,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Raven,” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.”
Progress
The eggshells represent the mad men and how each murder is delicately planned out, but the guilt and fear consume them, causing them to "break" in the end. I went with handwritten text to emphasize an uneasiness that you do not get with a uniform font. This project was a lot of trial and error and challenged me to think creatively. (The text on the cover was hand-written in Adobe Sketch on my iPad Pro).
