Takata

Client: Car owners

Tens of millions of vehicles with Takata air bags are under recall. Long-term exposure to high heat and humidity can cause these air bags to explode when deployed. Such explosions have caused injuries, and even deaths.

Recently: A separate group of defective Takata air bags was recalled in late 2019. Unlike the air bag inflators in the larger Takata recalls, the new recall involves non-azide driver inflators. The defect in the NADI inflators can result in the air bag either exploding or under-inflating during deployment.

My role for this project was to spread awareness for defective airbags. I used Takata’s color palette and also incorporated their bold style. My design challenge was color usage for text. Takata uses orange to grab viewers attention, but I didn’t want it to be too intense. My solution was to create 3 bright points of orange.

The Takata palm cards were another way to inform people about defective airbags. To reach a wider audience, they come in 3 languages: English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. My biggest design challenge was spacing. These palm cards are 4x9in and needed to include a lot of information. The languages also take up different amounts of space when typed out, so I had to adjust the spacing to make everything fit comfortably.
